For the past several years, volunteers from our church have participated in gleaning. We have had over 100 volunteers, from toddlers to teenagers to 80 year olds, glean thousands of pounds of corn and tomatoes. We meet at 7:15am at the church and car pool to the site. We are ususally in the fields for about 2-1/2 to 3 hours and are back about 1:00pm.
What is gleaning? Gleaning is a biblical initiative that involves volunteers picking produce that has been left in farmers' fields after commercial harvesting. The Gleaning Program in Palm Beach County is operated by C.R.O.S. Ministries, one of our mission partners, and funded by the United Way and Palm Beach DHS. The food is distributed throught the Daily bread Food Bank to local agencies that work to feed the hungry in our community.
Gleaning is a great way for young and old to participate in Responding to the Needs of others. To sign up please contact Cindy O'Connell, or you can call her at 561-394-9836.
Gleaning volunteers are needed several times a year.
